about
based on the border of herefordshire, shropshire and wales, printmaker hannah madden designs and creates block printed floral and nature inspired patterns and motifs
hannah hand carves her block work and uses non-toxic water based inks to print by hand on to various paper goods and fabrics, transforming her original drawings into a wide and colourful range of stationery and homewares
each item takes time to create and is made with great care and attention; every piece then being unique and individual from the next, adding to the beauty and charm of hand printing. all colours are mixed by hannah and all materials used are eco-friendly, recycled and uk source wherever possible
“i’ve always had a love for art and design. in college i was able to explore and experiment in many different areas but found that my true love was design and print making. being able to work on a process from start to finish; from having the idea, drawing it, creating a block to eventually holding something physical is incredibly rewarding and every piece seems to make me more enthusiastic when producing the next
i draw inspiration from my surroundings and often photograph or sketch a potential print when i am out and about. there is a certain excitement when pulling back a print block to reveal another new creation for the first time. there is something special about creating prints by hand. once the original is complete, you may use the same image over and over again but it’s unique every time. i find that there is a relaxing quality to block printing by hand and although the method may seem repetitive it is very calming”
hannah sells her work at local craft markets throughout the year as well as selling through online shops, various galleries and stockists dotted around the country. she also showcases her wares from a small outlet in the welsh market town of llandovery (carmarthenshire). her creations are displayed in a small window space in her father-in-laws shop
